What I Keep in My Son's Desk for Gluten-Free Emergencies

A few months into the school year, I realized the surprise moments — a birthday cupcake appearing out of nowhere, a pop-up pizza party, a "we're celebrating early dismissal" treat — were the actual hard part. Not the everyday lunches. The surprises.

So we built a small, labeled snack box that lives in his desk, just for those moments.

What's in it, on rotation:

  • A couple of individually wrapped safe cookies or treats (something that feels like a "treat," not a consolation prize)
  • A small bag of a favorite gluten-free candy
  • A safe granola or snack bar
  • Something a little "fun" — a lollipop, a fruit snack he actually likes — so it doesn't feel like the sad backup option

Why this has been a game-changer:

He doesn't have to sit there empty-handed while the class eats cupcakes. He doesn't have to come find me or wait for a substitute snack from home. He just reaches into his own desk and has something that's just as fun as what everyone else is having.

I refill it every few weeks, and honestly, it's become one of my favorite small rituals — a tiny thing that takes the sting out of being the kid with the different rules.

If you're building one of these for your own kid, I'd genuinely love to hear what ends up in it. Half the fun of this community is trading ideas that actually work.
