Every "gluten-free grocery list" I found when I was starting out looked like it was written by someone who'd never actually had to feed a real family on a real budget. So here's mine — the stuff that's actually in my cart most weeks.
Pantry staples:
- Rice, quinoa, and certified gluten-free oats
- Gluten-free pasta (there are genuinely good ones now — this was not always true)
- Corn tortillas (naturally gluten-free and a lifesaver for taco night)
- Gluten-free flour blend for baking
Snacks that don't taste like sad cardboard:
- Rice cakes with real toppings, not the plain ones that taste like nothing
- Popcorn (naturally gluten-free, always a safe bet)
- Fruit and nut bars — check labels, but a lot of them are safe
- The rotating cast of snacks we feature in the box every month, because half the fun is finding the ones you'd never pick up yourself
Proteins:
- Fresh meat, poultry, fish (naturally gluten-free — just watch marinades and breading)
- Eggs
- Plain Greek yogurt
The stuff that trips people up:
- Deli meat (some brands add gluten-containing fillers)
- Soups (flour is a common thickener)
- Sauces and condiments (see post #1 — I promise I'm not obsessed, it's just genuinely everywhere)
This isn't exhaustive, and it's not meant to be scary. It's meant to save you the years of trial and error I went through.
