Newly Diagnosed with Celiac Disease? Start Here.

If you just got that diagnosis, I want to say the thing nobody said to me clearly enough when I got mine: it's a lot right now, and that's okay.

You're not just changing what you eat. You're relearning how to grocery shop, how to eat out, how to read a label, how to explain this to family members who don't quite get it yet. It's genuinely overwhelming. So here's where I'd start if I were doing it again.

First, breathe. You don't have to have this figured out by next week.

Second, clean out your kitchen strategically, not frantically. You don't need to throw away every crumb today. Start with obvious offenders (bread, pasta, flour, cereal) and go from there. Cross-contact matters, but so does not burning yourself out on day one.

Third, get comfortable with three phrases:

  • "Is this gluten-free?"
  • "Does this share a fryer/prep space with wheat?"
  • "Can you check the ingredients for me?"

You will say these a lot. That's normal, not annoying — a good restaurant or brand won't mind the question.

Fourth, find your safe staples before you try to get fancy. A handful of go-to breakfasts, lunches, and snacks you know are safe and you actually like will save your sanity more than any Pinterest board of gluten-free recipes.

Fifth — and I say this as someone who lives with celiac myself, not just as someone selling you something — you don't have to figure out every brand alone. Trying new products is a whole research project when you're already exhausted from everything else. That's genuinely the reason Purely Gluten-Free exists.

You've got this. It gets so much easier than it feels right now.
